Institute Biographical Profile:

Steven and Michelle Bates were elated to have a child. They tried for two years before Michelle became pregnant with a baby boy. Their love was so blind, they even overlooked his illegal mutant power.

Connor was born to a middle income family in the harbor city of Duluth, Minnesota. He was an only child of a shipyard captain and nurse practitioner. As a child Connor would be frequently found by Lake Superior, running along the agate laden beach with his dog and friends. He was an energetic young child with no aspirations other than to run out the soles of his shoes. His father kept a careful eye on the boy as he worked in the shipyards during the day.

In high school, Connor’s life was what might be called blessed. He was captain of the football team, was in the top five percent of his class, and had a full scholarship to Notre Dame for Medical School. He was a true humanist. He was president of the peer counseling program which helped troubled teens find solace. Connor was also bisexual, something that may have actually affected his popularity for the positive. He dated Jeff the class president and Karen the head cheerleader. Secretly he felt stronger emotions for men and could not see his future with a woman and a family. During the summers Connor spent time working in the emergency room at a local hospital. He underwent Emergency Medical Technician training under his mother's guidance and tutelage.

Unfortunately, his life changed when his genetic mutation emerged.

Connor was sitting in his last day of class; the emotions in his body were powerful. He was anxious for graduation, afraid of his future, proud of his accomplishments, angry at his flaws…while all of the emotions stirred in his mind; he watched the clock tick the final seconds of his high school life. He was an adult. The second hand hit the 59th second and he smiled. As the tips of hips lips arched up and the class began to grow with nervous anticipation the second hand hit the 12. As the bell rang it was echoed with an explosion. The clock exploded, showering liquid glass on the class, no one was seriously injured, though many were shook up.

That was far from the first time something went wrong when Connor’s emotions were high, a difficult state to escape as a teen. He knew that it was him. Somehow he had the ability to manipulate the speed of atoms,  hence causing them to alter the state of matter. His powers manifested typically by causing melting, bending, and collapsing, but in extreme cases like the clock, it caused implosion or explosion into a gaseous state. Connor found that he could sometimes call upon this power when he concentrated hard enough, but more often than not it crept up on him during times of high emotional strain.

Connor has inadvertently destroyed a football, car tire, lawn mower, snow bank, and other inanimate objects. His worst fear and cause of sleepless nights was an accidental death because of his power.

His parents never talked about the ability. They accepted him as he was and did not care. Steve and Michelle did not see it as an abjuration. They were however concerned about Connor’s lack of control and as such, in the summer after his senior year sent him to an institute for people with abilities, some like his, some much different. The Dean of the institute promised two things – no harm would fall their child and that they would try their best to help Connor develop control over his abilities.

Connor finally learned to control his powers with the help of the Institute professors. It was still difficult for him to alter solids directly into gas and vice versa, he did not have a problem liquefying solids. In addition Connor received advanced medical training from the professors versed in biology, chemistry, and medicine.

After the collapse of the Institute Connor could not return home and put his family at risk. He learned that the Government had already interrogated them. He determined it would be best if they thought he was dead.

Institute Biological Profile:

Connor is an active and athletic youth. He played high school football and was active in track and field events. He does not possess a genetic factor that increases his strength or agility, however because of his athleticism he is relatively strong.

Connor does not have any disease diagnoses and is not at risk for health problems.

Institute Psychological Profile:

Connor hides his negative emotions under an exterior. He tries to make light of most situations, causing him to be a popular person to hang around. He flirts and smiles often. He rarely exhibits anger, sadness, or very personal emotions. No one knows about his sleepless nights and fear of killing. He is an extreme pacifist.

Connor can become friends with almost anyone, finding a positive in most people. He has a need to make sure that people are safe and happy.

He is a friendly person, however not a protector. While he feels for people who do not have strong self-esteem and internal locus of control he feels uncomfortable around them. Though someone who believes he is always right and too aggressive is just as uncomforting to him. He is attracted to personalities that have a strong sense of self and will not rely on him or others to make decisions.
